Capernaum

Jesus' base of ministry in Galilee

Capernaum was a fishing town on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and after leaving Nazareth, Jesus came and dwelt there, making it the hub of his Galilean ministry — so much so that Matthew calls it his own city. Here he called Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Matthew, healed Peter's mother-in-law, and taught in the synagogue with authority.

So many of Jesus' mighty works were done in Capernaum that its unbelief drew a solemn warning: for all it had seen, it would be brought down. The town that hosted more of Jesus' miracles than any other became a warning that nearness to the light is not the same as receiving it — privilege carries responsibility.
