Gethsemane

The garden of Jesus' agony

Gethsemane — the name means oil press — was a garden of olive trees on the Mount of Olives, where Jesus often went with his disciples. On the night of his betrayal he came here to pray, and the weight of what lay ahead pressed on him so heavily that his sweat was as it were great drops of blood. He asked that the cup might pass, then surrendered: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

In Gethsemane the greatest battle was won before a hand was laid on him — the battle of the will, fought on his knees. While his closest friends slept, Jesus embraced the Father's will for the salvation of the world. The garden where the first Adam fell to temptation is answered by the garden where the last Adam surrendered in perfect obedience.

Gethsemane in Scripture

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Matthew 26:36, KJV
