Mount Carmel was the site of Elijah's dramatic contest with the prophets of Baal. He challenged the people: How long halt ye between two opinions? — and called for the God who answered by fire to be acknowledged as the true God.
When God sent fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice, the people fell on their faces crying, The LORD, he is the God. Carmel stands for the moment of decision between the living God and every substitute.
