The Fig Tree

A symbol of Israel, peace, and fruitfulness

The fig tree is a recurring biblical image of peace, security, and fruitfulness — every man sitting under his own vine and fig tree, unafraid. It also stands for Israel, and its fruit (or lack of it) for spiritual health.

Jesus used the fig tree in parables and signs, calling his people to bear real fruit. The fig tree reminds us that God looks for genuine fruitfulness, and promises a future of peace under his reign.

The Fig Tree in Scripture

But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.
Micah 4:4, KJV
