One is the number of unity and of God himself: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD. This great confession, the Shema, declares that there is one God, worthy of undivided love and worship.
One also speaks of the unity God desires among his people — that they may be one, Jesus prayed — and of the single-hearted devotion God asks: to love him with all our heart.
