The tabernacle was the portable tent of meeting God commanded Israel to build so that he might dwell among them in the wilderness. Every detail — the ark, the altar, the veil — pointed to how a holy God could dwell with sinful people.
The tabernacle foreshadows Christ, of whom John says the Word dwelt (literally, tabernacled) among us — God pitching his tent in human flesh.
