Wine appears in Scripture as a symbol of joy and blessing — wine that maketh glad the heart of man — and of abundance. Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding feast.
At the Last Supper, Jesus gave the cup as a sign of his blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Wine came to represent both the gladness of God's blessing and the cost of our redemption.
