Zion was originally the fortified hill David captured to make his capital, but the name grew to mean far more — the temple mount, the whole city of Jerusalem, and finally the dwelling place of God among his people. The Psalms sing of it as beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth... the city of the great King.
In the prophets and the New Testament, Zion becomes a picture of God's eternal home for the redeemed. Hebrews tells believers, ye are come unto mount Sion... the heavenly Jerusalem, and the great multitude of the saved. To be bound for Zion is to be bound for the presence of God — the destination of every pilgrim heart.
