Bible questions

How Can I Be Closer to God?

Drawing near, and being drawn — the way back to intimacy with God.

The short answer

The Bible's promise is simple: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you” (James 4:8). Nearness grows through his word, prayer, obedience, and worship — and God always meets those who seek him (Jeremiah 29:13).

God meets those who draw near

Closeness to God is not reserved for the spiritually elite. He promises that if we draw near, he will draw near to us, and that those who seek him with all their heart will find him. The first move is often ours; the welcome is always his.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
James 4:8, KJV

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13, KJV

Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

The paths of nearness

Intimacy with God grows through the ordinary means: soaking in his word, talking with him in prayer, obeying what he shows us, and worshipping. Distance usually creeps in through neglect; the way back is simply to return.

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
Psalm 145:18, KJV

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5, KJV

He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.

Quick answers

Why do I feel far from God?
Distance can come from neglect, sin, busyness, or simply a dry season. The remedy is to return — to his word and presence — trusting his promise to draw near to those who draw near to him.
Does God feel far even when he isn't?
Yes — feelings aren't a reliable gauge of God's nearness. He promises never to leave those who are his, even when he seems distant. Keep coming near by faith, not feeling.
What's the fastest way to grow closer to God?
There's no shortcut, but consistent time in Scripture and honest prayer, joined to obedience, is how nearness deepens. Abide in Christ daily, and intimacy grows.
