How Do I Hear God's Voice?

The main ways God still speaks — and how to recognise them.

The short answer

God speaks most clearly and reliably through his word (2 Timothy 3:16), and also through prayer, the Holy Spirit's guidance (John 16:13), wise counsel, and circumstances — and Jesus says his sheep learn to know his voice (John 10:27).

Primarily through his word

The most certain place to hear God is Scripture, which is God-breathed and living. Anything we sense must line up with what God has already said; he never contradicts his word. Learning the Bible tunes our ears to his voice.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:16, KJV

All scripture is given by inspiration of God.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105, KJV

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Learning to recognise him

Jesus says his sheep know his voice — recognition grows with relationship. Through prayer, the Spirit's inner prompting, godly counsel, and circumstances, God guides those who walk with him. Often his voice is not dramatic but a quiet, steady leading.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:27, KJV

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:13, KJV

When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.

Quick answers

Does God still speak today?
Yes — supremely through Scripture, and also by his Spirit, prayer, counsel, and providence. He guides those who seek him, though rarely in an audible voice.
How do I know it's God and not just my own thoughts?
Test every impression against Scripture, seek wise counsel, pray for confirmation, and watch for peace. God never leads contrary to his written word.
Why does God feel silent sometimes?
Seasons of silence are common and not necessarily a sign of God's absence. Keep returning to his word, keep praying, and trust that he is near even when he seems quiet.
