How Do I Stop Worrying?

Trading anxious thoughts for prayer, trust, and God's peace.

The short answer

The Bible's antidote to worry is not to try harder to relax but to hand the weight over: trade anxiety for prayer (Philippians 4:6–7), cast your care on God because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7), and take one day at a time (Matthew 6:34).

Trade worry for prayer

Paul's prescription is specific: be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. The result is a peace that guards heart and mind — peace that doesn't depend on the circumstances changing.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Philippians 4:6, KJV

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7, KJV

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds.

Cast the care, take one day

Peter says to cast — actively throw — our cares on God. Jesus says to take no thought for tomorrow, living one day at a time on daily grace. Worry borrows trouble that today's strength was never meant to carry.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
1 Peter 5:7, KJV

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Matthew 6:34, KJV

Take therefore no thought for the morrow.

Quick answers

What if I pray and still feel anxious?
Peace can be a process. Keep casting the care back to God each time it returns, fill your mind with what is true (Philippians 4:8), and remember peace is promised as a guard, not always an instant feeling.
Is anxiety a lack of faith?
Not necessarily — anxiety has many causes, including physical ones. The Bible addresses worry gently, and reaching for medical or counselling help when needed is wise, not faithless.
What verses help most with worry?
Philippians 4:6–7, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:25–34, and Isaiah 26:3 are treasured for anxious moments.
