What Does 'Amen' Mean?

The little word of agreement that ends our prayers.

The short answer

'Amen' is a Hebrew word meaning “so be it” or “truly” — an expression of agreement, affirmation, and faith. We say it to affirm a prayer or truth as sure, and Jesus is even called “the Amen” (Revelation 3:14), God's faithful yes.

So be it, truly

Amen comes from a Hebrew root meaning firm, faithful, or reliable. To say amen is to say 'let it be so' or 'this is true and sure' — a wholehearted agreement with what has been prayed or declared.

Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.
Deuteronomy 27:15, KJV

And all the people shall say, Amen.

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
1 Corinthians 14:16, KJV

How shall he... say Amen at thy giving of thanks?

Jesus, the Amen

Strikingly, Jesus is called 'the Amen, the faithful and true witness.' All God's promises find their yes and amen in him. When we say amen, we're echoing the faithfulness of God himself, in whom every promise is sure.

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
2 Corinthians 1:20, KJV

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen.

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Revelation 3:14, KJV

These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness.

Quick answers

Why do we say amen at the end of prayers?
It's a way of affirming and agreeing with the prayer — 'let it be so.' Saying amen makes a prayer our own and expresses faith that God hears.
Is amen only for the end of prayers?
No — in the Bible it's used to affirm truths, blessings, and declarations, not just to close prayers. It's a word of hearty agreement wherever truth is spoken.
Does amen mean 'the end'?
Not exactly. Though it often comes at the end, it doesn't mean 'finished' — it means 'truly' or 'so be it,' an affirmation of what was just said.
