What Does the Bible Say About Death?
Why death is called an enemy, and how the gospel turns the grave into a doorway.
The Bible calls death the last enemy, but an already-defeated one: because Christ rose, death for believers is not a wall but a doorway — “I am the resurrection, and the life” (John 11:25) — and one day death itself will be no more (Revelation 21:4).
An enemy, but a defeated one
Scripture is honest that death is real and grievous — the last enemy. But it announces that Christ has disarmed it. Through his resurrection, death has lost its sting for those who trust him, and the grave has lost its victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
I am the resurrection, and the life.
Hope beyond the grave
For the believer, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Scripture points to a day when death, sorrow, and pain are gone forever — so Christians grieve, but not as those without hope.
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Absent from the body... present with the Lord.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
God shall wipe away all tears... and there shall be no more death.
Quick answers
- What happens when we die?
- The Bible teaches that death is not the end. For those in Christ, it is being present with the Lord, awaiting the resurrection of the body; Scripture also warns of judgment, making our response to Christ the great question of life.
- Should Christians fear death?
- Scripture offers freedom from the fear of death through Christ's victory over it. Psalm 23 walks through the valley of the shadow without fear, because the Shepherd is there. Grief is natural; terror need not rule.
- Is there life after death?
- Yes — the Bible consistently teaches conscious existence beyond death and a future bodily resurrection, secured by Christ's own resurrection as the firstfruits of all who belong to him.
