What Does the Bible Say About Suffering?
Why God allows pain, how he meets us in it, and the glory he promises beyond it.
The Bible never pretends suffering away, but refuses to leave it meaningless: it promises God's nearness in pain (Psalm 34:18), his purpose within it (Romans 8:28), and a glory beyond it that will make it look small (Romans 8:18).
God is near in the pain
Scripture's first word to the suffering is not an explanation but a presence. God is close to the broken-hearted; he is the God of all comfort who meets us in every trouble. The Bible is full of raw laments — proof that God welcomes honest grief, not just tidy faith.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
The Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
Purpose in it, glory beyond it
The Bible dares to say God works even suffering for good, refining faith like gold and producing endurance and hope. And it lifts our eyes past the present: the sufferings of now are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
All things work together for good to them that love God.
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory.
Quick answers
- Why does God allow suffering?
- The Bible ties suffering to a fallen world, and while it doesn't answer every 'why,' it shows a God who entered our suffering in Christ and promises to redeem it. Often we get not an explanation but his presence.
- Does God cause my suffering?
- Scripture distinguishes what God causes from what he allows and uses. In a broken world, pain comes from many sources, but God is sovereign enough to weave even the worst of it toward good for those who love him.
- How do I hold on to faith while suffering?
- Bring God honest lament, lean on his nearness and his people, and fix your hope beyond the present. Job lost everything yet clung to his Redeemer; you can bring both your questions and your trust.
