What Does the Bible Say About Suicide?

The preciousness of life, the depth of God's love, and where to find help.

The short answer

If you are in crisis, please reach out now to someone you trust or a crisis line — you are not alone. The Bible treats every life as precious and God-made (Psalm 139:14), affirms that nothing can separate believers from God's love (Romans 8:38–39), and repeatedly meets people at the end of their strength with hope.

Your life is precious to God

Scripture holds every human life as sacred, made in God's image and fearfully and wonderfully formed. However worthless or trapped you may feel, that is not how God sees you. Despair lies; God's word tells the truth about your value.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139:14, KJV

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18, KJV

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

There is hope, and there is help

The Bible is full of people who reached the end of their strength — Elijah, Job, the psalmists — and found God near, patient, and life-giving. God's love cannot be lost. And reaching out for help — to a trusted person, a pastor, a doctor, or a crisis line — is a brave and wise step, not a failure.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Romans 8:38, KJV

I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life... shall be able to separate us from the love of God.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28, KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Quick answers

I'm having thoughts of suicide — what should I do?
Please tell someone right now — a trusted friend, family member, pastor, or a crisis helpline in your country. You do not have to carry this alone, and help is available. Your life matters more than you can feel in this moment.
Does the Bible say suicide is unforgivable?
No. The Bible never names suicide as an unforgivable sin. Salvation rests on Christ's finished work, not on the circumstances of death. God's grace is deeper than our darkest moments, and his love for the struggling is tender.
How can faith help someone who is suicidal?
Faith offers hope, the assurance of God's love, and a community meant to carry one another. But faith and professional help work together — God often brings healing through counsellors, doctors, and the people who show up.
