What Is Mercy in the Bible?
God withholding what we deserve — and its difference from grace.
Mercy is God withholding the judgment we deserve and meeting us with compassion instead. Scripture says his mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23) and that he is rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4), delighting to forgive.
Compassion instead of judgment
Mercy is not getting the punishment we've earned. God is described as merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. His mercy is not reluctant but delighted — he would rather forgive than condemn.
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
He delighteth in mercy.
New every morning
God's mercy is inexhaustible and fresh each day — new every morning. However far we've fallen, mercy offers a fresh start, and we're called to extend the same mercy to others that we've received.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
Quick answers
- What's the difference between mercy and grace?
- Mercy is not receiving the punishment we deserve; grace is receiving the blessing we don't deserve. Mercy withholds judgment; grace gives favour. Both meet at the cross.
- Does God's mercy have limits?
- Scripture presents God's mercy as vast and freely offered to all who turn to him. Its urgency lies in our response — mercy is offered now, and we're called to receive it.
- How should I show mercy to others?
- By forgiving, showing compassion, and withholding revenge — treating others with the mercy God has shown you. Jesus says the merciful are blessed and will obtain mercy.
