What Is Salvation?

The great rescue God works in Christ — from sin's penalty, power, and presence.

The short answer

Salvation is God's rescue of sinners through Jesus Christ — deliverance from sin's penalty, power, and one day its very presence. It is by grace through faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8–9), and found in no other name (Acts 4:12).

What we're saved from and for

Salvation addresses humanity's deepest problem: sin, whose wage is death. Through Christ's death and resurrection, God rescues us from judgment and reconciles us to himself — saved not only from sin but for a restored relationship with God and eternal life.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23, KJV

The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 4:12, KJV

Neither is there salvation in any other.

Received by grace through faith

Salvation is a gift, not a wage. It cannot be earned by good works; it is received by grace through faith in Christ. This keeps salvation certain — resting on what God has done, not on our fluctuating performance.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:8, KJV

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Titus 3:5, KJV

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.

Quick answers

Can I earn salvation by being good?
No. The Bible is clear that salvation is a gift of grace received by faith, not earned by works — precisely so no one can boast, and so that it rests on God's faithfulness rather than ours.
Can I lose my salvation?
Christians differ here, but Scripture gives great assurance: Jesus says his sheep shall never perish, and God promises to complete the work he began. Salvation rests on his grip, not merely ours.
How do I receive salvation?
Turn from sin and trust Jesus as Lord and Saviour, believing he died and rose for you. 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.'
