What Is the Sabbath?

God's gift of rest — its meaning and how Christians view it.

The short answer

The Sabbath is a God-given day of rest and worship, rooted in creation (Genesis 2:2–3) and commanded in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8). Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27), and he is our ultimate rest (Matthew 11:28).

A day of rest, rooted in creation

God rested on the seventh day of creation and made the Sabbath holy, later commanding Israel to keep it. It's a rhythm of work and rest built into the world — a gift, not merely a rule, teaching us to trust God rather than our own ceaseless labour.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Genesis 2:3, KJV

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exodus 20:8, KJV

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Made for man, fulfilled in Christ

Jesus taught that the Sabbath was made for our good, not as a burden. Many Christians gather on Sunday, the day of resurrection, to worship and rest. Ultimately, Scripture points to Jesus himself as our rest — the one who gives rest to the weary soul.

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mark 2:27, KJV

The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28, KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Quick answers

Do Christians have to keep the Sabbath?
Christians hold differing views. Many see the principle of rest and worship as enduring, often observed on Sunday, while understanding that Christ fulfils the Sabbath and gives our souls their deepest rest.
Why do many Christians worship on Sunday?
The early church gathered on the first day of the week to celebrate Jesus' resurrection, which happened on a Sunday. It became the primary day for Christian worship.
What's the purpose of the Sabbath?
Rest, worship, and trust — stepping back from work to remember that God, not our labour, sustains us. It's a gift for our good and a pointer to the rest Christ gives.
