The Gospel of Matthew

Jesus the promised King — the Gospel that shows how he fulfils the whole Old Testament.

Overview

Matthew is the first Gospel, written to show that Jesus is the long-promised King of Israel — the fulfilment of everything the Old Testament pointed toward. It is rich with Jesus' teaching, including the Sermon on the Mount, the most famous sermon ever preached.

Matthew moves from Jesus' birth to his death and resurrection, ending with the Great Commission — the risen King sending his followers to make disciples of all nations.

Key themes

Fulfilment

Again and again Matthew shows Jesus fulfilling Old Testament prophecy — he is the promised one.

The kingdom of heaven

Jesus announces and embodies God's kingdom, teaching what life under God's reign looks like.

Discipleship

Matthew calls readers not just to admire Jesus but to follow and obey him.

How to read Matthew

  • Read the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5–7) slowly and often.

  • Notice the 'fulfilled' quotations linking Jesus to the Old Testament.

  • Read it as an invitation to follow, not just information to learn.
