Jonathan means the LORD has given, and his life was a gift given away. Son of King Saul and heir to the throne, he loved David as his own soul and made a covenant with him — even knowing David would be king in his place. He risked his life and his crown for his friend.
A man of great courage — he once routed a Philistine garrison believing there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few — Jonathan is remembered above all for a loyalty that cost him everything and asked for nothing.
Jonathan is a warm, enduring classic, shortened affectionately to Jon or Nathan.
