Zechariah means the LORD remembers, and his story proves it. An old priest, childless with his wife Elisabeth, he was told by the angel Gabriel that they would have a son — John the Baptist. He doubted, and was struck silent until the birth; when he wrote his name is John, his tongue was loosed and he burst into prophecy, the Benedictus.
The name is also borne by an Old Testament prophet who foretold the King coming lowly, riding upon an ass. Both Zechariahs point forward to Christ.
Zechariah is a grand, distinctive classic, warmly shortened to Zach or Zac.
