Zipporah — her name means bird — was one of the seven daughters of the priest of Midian, whom Moses met at a well when he defended them from rough shepherds. He married her during his forty quiet years in the desert, and she bore him two sons.
She stands at the edge of the great exodus story, the companion of Moses' hidden years before the burning bush. Her name has a lovely, unusual music to it.
Zipporah is a rare, poetic name — distinctive and increasingly admired, sometimes shortened to Zippy.
