Back to School: Prayers and Verses for the First Week (and the Wobbly Ones)

By Niall Florence · 25 August 2026 · 3 min read · For Children · Prayer

September mornings have their own weather: new shoes, nervous tummies, a child disappearing through a gate looking smaller than they did all summer. Faith has walked children to school for generations, and it has words for exactly this week. Here are the verses for the school run and short prayers for everyone involved — including the parent walking home with the empty buggy.

The school-run verse

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Psalm 121:8, KJV

Going out and coming in — the twice-daily journey, covered in both directions, from this time forth. This is the verse to say at the door each morning of the first week. Children like that it means the walk there and the walk back.

For the nervous child

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
Psalm 56:3, KJV

Nine words a five-year-old can carry into assembly. Teach it before it's needed; deploy it at the gate. It doesn't promise no fear — it gives fear somewhere to go, which is far more useful at 8:50 a.m.

For the learning itself

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7, KJV

Proverbs' opening thesis: all real knowledge starts with knowing who God is. A good verse for the front of a new homework diary — and for parents to remember when the maths curriculum defeats everyone at the kitchen table.

A prayer for the first morning

"Father, thank You for this brand-new year — the clean shoes, the sharpened pencils, the child You've lent us. Walk in with them today. Give them one kind friend by Friday, a teacher who sees them, and courage for the wobbly bits. Preserve their going out and their coming in. Amen."

A prayer for the child to say

"Dear God, thank You for my new class. Help me be brave, be kind, and have a good day. Amen." — Short enough to say in the queue, complete enough to count.

A prayer for the parent at the gate

"Lord, they looked so small walking in. I hand them to You for the hours I can't see — the playground, the friendships, the words that land on them. Keep them, grow them, and bring them out chattering. And help me with this strange quiet. Amen."

A prayer for teachers

"Father, bless the teachers this year — patience by the crateload, eyes for the child at the back, and strength for the marking. They shape what our children become; shape them kindly as they do. Amen."

For the wisdom the year will need

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5, KJV

For parents' evenings, friendship dramas, school choices, and every other judgement call the year will demand: wisdom is given liberally to those who ask, and God never makes you feel small for asking. Neither should a school year. One verse each morning keeps the whole household's supply line open — ours is ready before the school run, every day.
