7 Bible Verses About Courage (For Ordinary Frightening Things)

Courage in Scripture is never the absence of fear — the people commanded to "fear not" were told so precisely because they were afraid. Biblical courage is something sturdier and more available: doing the necessary thing while afraid, on the strength of promised company. Seven verses for the ordinary frightening things — the interview, the diagnosis, the conversation you've been postponing.
1. The commissioning verse
Spoken to a man inheriting an impossible job. Notice the logic: courage is commanded, and the only reason given is company — with thee, whithersoever. Courage is the reasonable response of the accompanied.
2. The same promise, for handovers
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Moses to the whole nation on succession day. The double negative — will not fail, nor forsake — is the strongest form of promise Hebrew has. Some things get said twice because fear needs telling twice.
3. For the waiting kind of courage
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Sometimes the brave thing isn't charging — it's holding position while God works. Waiting courage is the least glamorous kind and often the hardest; this verse dignifies it.
4. For hope-fuelled courage
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
The address list is generous: all ye that hope. Not the naturally brave — the hoping. If you can hope, you qualify for the strengthening.
5. For checking fear's origin
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Whatever delivered the timidity, it wasn't your Father. What He issued instead — power, love, a sound mind — is already in the house. You're allowed to refuse the other parcel.
6. For the moment fear arrives
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
Nine words, learnable by a child, needed by every adult. It doesn't say "I will not be afraid" — it gives fear somewhere to go the moment it lands. Say it in the car park before you walk in.
7. The standing orders
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
Paul's four-part brief — and the verse right after it adds the temperature: "Let all your things be done with charity." Courage with warmth is the complete issue.
Before the frightening thing
Courage verses work best loaded in advance — read before the battlefield, not on it. Whatever's on your calendar this week that tightens your chest: pick one of these seven, read it each morning until the day arrives, and walk in accompanied.
