How to Start Family Prayer (A Simple, Doable Beginning)

By Niall Florence · 4 September 2026 · 1 min read · Prayer

Many families want to pray together but never start, because it feels awkward or they imagine it has to be long and polished. It doesn't. Here's a simple way to begin that can actually last.

God shows up for the small gathering

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Matthew 18:20, KJV

You don't need a crowd or a chapel. Two or three of you around a table is enough for Jesus to be in the midst. That promise takes the pressure off.

Keep it short and real

Start with one minute at one fixed time — bedtime or dinner. Each person names one thank-you and one please. That's it. Short and sincere beats long and dreaded, especially with children.

Make it a rhythm, not an event

Pray without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV

The goal is a habit, not a performance. Little and often — the same small prayer, most days — builds something that outlasts any single heartfelt session.

Expect wriggling, giggles, and off-days. Keep going anyway. You're not aiming for perfect; you're teaching your children that talking to God is simply what your family does.
