4 Short Prayers for Anxiety (And the Verses Behind Them)

By Niall Florence · 19 July 2026 · 2 min read · Prayer

Anxiety makes praying harder precisely when it's needed most — a spinning mind can't compose paragraphs. So don't. Short, borrowed, repeated prayers are the anxious heart's best tools, and each of these four is anchored to a verse strong enough to take the weight. Borrow freely; repetition isn't vain when it's honest.

1. The handover prayer

"Father, I can't hold this and I'm done pretending I can. I cast it on You — the whole weight of it — because You said You care for me. Take the night shift; I'm off duty. Amen."

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
1 Peter 5:7, KJV

2. The list-conversion prayer

"Lord, here's the list I was going to worry through: [name them — the appointment, the money, the person]. I'm converting each one into a request instead. And thank You — for what You've already carried me through, and for hearing this now. Guard my mind like You promised. Amen."

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6–7, KJV

3. The 3 a.m. prayer

"God, my thoughts are a multitude tonight and I can't out-argue them. Send Your comforts in — one for each anxious voice — until my soul settles. I'm going to lie here and let You be the one on watch. Amen."

In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:19, KJV

4. The held prayer

"Father, I'm afraid and I won't dress it up. Be with me the way You promised — strengthen me, help me, hold me with Your right hand. I can't stop the shaking, but You can hold something that shakes. Amen."

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10, KJV

Using them

Pick one — the one that matches tonight — and keep it where the anxiety finds you: lock screen, bedside note, wallet card. Pray it as often as the spiral restarts; that's not failure, that's the method. And two honest notes: anxiety that persists deserves a doctor as well as a prayer (Scripture and good medicine are friends, not rivals), and a daily rhythm helps more than crisis-only praying — one verse each morning builds the shelter before the storm needs it. That's what we're here for.
