Who Was Mary, the Mother of Jesus? Faith and Surrender

2 June 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is one of the most significant women in all of history — a young woman of humble background whose willing 'yes' to God made her the mother of the Saviour. Her life is a beautiful model of faith, humility, and surrender. Here's who Mary was and what her story teaches.

An ordinary young woman

Mary was a young woman living in the small town of Nazareth, engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. She had no wealth, status, or power — an ordinary girl in an unremarkable place. Yet God chose her for the most extraordinary calling ever given to a human being: to bear his Son into the world.

The angel's announcement

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Son of God. It was an overwhelming, even frightening message, full of mystery and cost. Mary asked how it could be, but then responded with words of remarkable trust and submission to God's will.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:38, KJV

A song of praise

Mary's faith overflowed in worship. Her song, often called the Magnificat, magnifies God for his mercy, his faithfulness, and his habit of lifting up the humble and filling the hungry with good things. It reveals a young woman deeply steeped in Scripture and wholly devoted to God — her theology as striking as her obedience.

A sword through her soul

Mary's calling brought joy, but also sorrow. She treasured the wonders surrounding Jesus' birth, 'pondering them in her heart,' but she was also told a sword would pierce her own soul — and it did, as she watched her son rejected and crucified. She followed him faithfully to the very foot of the cross, and was among his followers after the resurrection.

What her life teaches

Mary models the heart of true faith: humble availability to God, willingness to be used whatever the cost, and worship that flows from trust. She shows that God delights to work through the lowly and overlooked, and that saying 'yes' to God may bring both great joy and deep sorrow. Her example is not to be worshipped, but imitated — 'be it unto me according to thy word.'

Mary was an ordinary young woman whose extraordinary faith made her the mother of Jesus. Her willing surrender, her Scripture-soaked worship, and her faithfulness through joy and grief make her one of the great examples of discipleship in the Bible. Her life invites each of us to the same humble response to God: 'behold the handmaid of the Lord.'
