Who Was Nicodemus? The Man Who Came by Night
30 May 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
Nicodemus was a respected religious leader who first came to Jesus under cover of darkness, and to whom Jesus spoke some of the most famous words in the Bible — about being 'born again.' His story, traced across John's Gospel, is a quiet picture of a cautious faith that slowly grew bold. Here's who Nicodemus was and what his life teaches.
A ruler who came by night
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council — a learned, powerful, respected man. Yet he was drawn to Jesus, and came to see him at night, perhaps to avoid the notice of his peers. He acknowledged that Jesus must have come from God, and Jesus met his caution with a challenge that went straight to the heart.
'Ye must be born again'
Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are 'born again' — born not merely of the flesh but of the Spirit. The accomplished teacher was baffled: how could someone be born a second time? Jesus was teaching that entering God's kingdom requires not self-improvement or religious credentials, but a new birth that only God can give.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
The most famous verse
It was in this very conversation that Jesus spoke the words known and loved around the world — that 'God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' The heart of the gospel was first unfolded to a cautious seeker who came in the dark.
Faith that grew bolder
Nicodemus appears twice more in John's Gospel, and each time a little braver. He spoke up among the council, urging that Jesus be given a fair hearing. And after the crucifixion, when it was dangerous to be associated with Jesus, Nicodemus came openly, helping Joseph of Arimathea bury him with a costly gift of spices. The man who once came by night now came into the light.
What his life teaches
Nicodemus teaches that no one is too educated, respectable, or religious to need the new birth Jesus offers. His story honours honest seekers who come with questions, and shows that faith can start cautiously and grow into courage. It reminds us that entering God's kingdom is God's gift through faith in Christ, not a reward for status or achievement.
Nicodemus moved from a secret night-time visit to a public act of devotion at the cross — a journey from cautious curiosity to costly faith. His story assures every hesitant seeker that Jesus welcomes honest questions, that the new birth is offered to all, and that a faith which begins in the shadows can, in time, step boldly into the light.
