Like as a father

By Niall Florence · 2 August 2026 · 1 min read

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
Psalm 103:13, KJV

Every parent knows the feeling this verse names — the old word is pity, but it means that ache of tender compassion: the thing that moves in you when your child is feverish at 2 a.m., or crumpled over a failure, or simply small and asleep and yours. David’s claim is that this feeling is not merely human. It is a copy of something original.

So the LORD pitieth. Your fiercest, most melted compassion for your children is the scale model; His compassion for you is the full-size original. The very next verse gives the reason: for he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. He factors in your limits the way you factor in your toddler’s — expecting stumbles, ready to catch, unshocked by weakness.

This changes both directions of family life. Upward: you can stop imagining God as a stern auditor; you know exactly how a good father feels about a struggling child, because you are one. And downward: every patient bedtime, every forgiveness, every catch-before-the-fall is you showing your children the character of God at kitchen height. Parent like the copy you are.
