Ordered steps, upheld falls

The first verse is the one men quote: steps ordered by the LORD — the reassurance that a life’s route is being arranged by Someone who sees the whole map. And tucked inside it, easy to miss: he delighteth in his way. God does not merely tolerate the walk He orders. He enjoys watching a good man take it, the way a father enjoys watching a son do anything at all.

But the psalmist, honest as ever, immediately adds the second verse — because ordered steps still include falls. Though he fall. Not if. The good man with the ordered route goes down sometimes: the mistake, the season of drift, the flat-on-face failure. The promise is not exemption; it is not utterly cast down — a fall, not a finish.

And the reason is the last clause, the tenderest image in the pair: the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. Any father who has walked a small child over rough ground knows the grip — the stumble happens, but the hand was already holding, so down never becomes destroyed. Walk today like a man held that way.
