Jehovah Shammah

The LORD Is There

Pronounced yeh-ho-VAH SHAM-mah

It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
Ezekiel 48:35, KJV

Jehovah Shammah — “the LORD is there” — is the closing name of the book of Ezekiel, given to the restored city in the prophet's final vision. After chapters of judgment and exile, the last word is presence: the LORD is there.

For a people who had lost their temple and feared God had abandoned them, no promise could mean more. The city's very name would proclaim that God had returned to dwell among his people.

This name answers our deepest fear — that in our worst moments, God is absent. Jehovah Shammah says otherwise. Wherever his people are, he is there; his presence is the true home we long for.

The whole Bible moves toward this promise: God dwelling with his people. It reaches its end in the new creation, where “the LORD is there” forever. Wherever you are today, he is there too.
