A lamp, not a floodlight

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
New believers often come to the Bible expecting a floodlight — total illumination of the whole route: what job, which city, whom to marry, how it all turns out. Then they read it, and the promised light seems smaller than advertised. This verse fixes the expectation, and the fix is a relief once it lands: the word is a lamp unto my feet. An ancient oil lamp lit a stride or two of ground. That was all. That was enough.
Enough, because walking only ever happens one step at a time. Scripture read daily gives daily light — enough to take today faithfully: this decision, this temptation named for what it is, this promise for this fear. Tomorrow’s stretch of path gets lit tomorrow, when you are standing on it with your lamp. The floodlight was never on offer; the faithful lamp always is.
Which is the whole case for reading a little every day rather than a lot occasionally. A lamp only lights the ground of the one carrying it, at walking pace, in the present tense. Bring it along each morning and the path takes care of itself — one lit stride at a time, all the way home.
