Gently led

This verse sits in the middle of Isaiah’s grandest chapter — the one where nations are a drop in a bucket and the heavens are stretched out like a curtain. And then, without changing speakers, the mighty God is described doing this: gathering lambs, carrying them against His chest, and gently leading those that are with young.

That last clause has belonged to mothers for as long as it has been read. The shepherd sets the pace of the whole flock by the ones carrying and nursing the lambs — he does not drive them at the speed of the strong. If your season is measured in small steps, interrupted nights, and progress nobody applauds, this verse says the Shepherd has already adjusted the pace. You are not behind. You are being gently led.

Notice, too, where the lambs ride: in his bosom — carried, not managed. The little ones you carry are carried, with you, by Someone stronger. Walk at the Shepherd’s pace today. It was set with you in mind.
