Elpis is the New Testament word for hope, and it means something far stronger than the way we often use the word today. When we say we hope for good weather, we mean we wish for it, unsure. Biblical elpis is different: it is confident expectation, a settled assurance about what God has promised. It is not hope against the evidence, but hope grounded in the character and faithfulness of God.
This is why Hebrews can call hope an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast. Christian hope is not anchored in circumstances, which shift, but in the risen Christ, who does not. Because he lives, the believer's hope has an object that cannot fail. Elpis looks past the present trouble to a promised future, and lets that certainty steady the heart today.
Elpis in Scripture
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
