Emet is the Hebrew word for truth, but it means more than factual accuracy. Rooted in a word for firmness and reliability, emet is truth you can lean your weight on — faithfulness, trustworthiness, the quality of being solid and sure. It is closely related to the word behind our amen. To say something is emet is to say it will hold.
God is described as abundant in emet — utterly reliable, never failing his word. His truth is not merely information but a place to stand: lead me in thy truth, prays the psalmist, wanting not just facts but a faithful path. When Jesus says I am the truth, he claims to be emet in person — the one who is completely trustworthy, and whose every promise holds.
Emet in Scripture
Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
