The Morning Psalm
Hebrew word

Shalom

peace, wholeness, well-being

Say shah-LOHM

Shalom is one of the richest words in the Hebrew Bible. We translate it peace, but it means far more than the absence of war or worry. Shalom is wholeness, completeness, flourishing — every part of life set right and knit together: right with God, right with others, right within. It is the world as God made it to be, and the world he is remaking.

This is why shalom is the heart of the priestly blessing — the LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace — and why the greeting shalom means far more than hello. When Jesus says my peace I give unto you, he offers this deep, whole-making shalom; and the New Testament announces that he himself is our peace, having made whole what sin had broken.

Shalom in Scripture

The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
