The Morning Psalm
Hebrew word

Tehillah

praise; a song of praise

Say teh-hil-LAH

Tehillah is the Hebrew word for praise — specifically, praise that overflows into song. Its plural, Tehillim, is the Hebrew title of the entire book of Psalms: the Praises. It is closely related to the root behind hallelujah (praise the LORD). Tehillah is worship that cannot stay silent, gladness set to music.

Scripture says God inhabits the tehillah of his people — he is enthroned on the praises of Israel. Praise is not flattery but the fitting response to who God is, and it does something in us: it lifts the eyes off self and onto God. His tehillah, the psalmist resolves, shall continually be in my mouth — a life tuned to praise.

Tehillah in Scripture

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
