Bethany was a village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, less than two miles from Jerusalem, and it was the closest thing Jesus had to a home near the capital. Here lived his friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, who welcomed him to their table — Martha serving, Mary sitting at his feet.
Bethany is where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, declaring, I am the resurrection, and the life, and where Mary anointed him for burial with costly perfume. And it was near Bethany, blessing his disciples, that he ascended to heaven. A small village becomes a place of friendship, resurrection, worship, and glory — proof that Jesus is at home among ordinary people who love him.
