Egypt

The land of slavery and deliverance

Egypt is where the family of Jacob went to escape famine and grew into a nation — and where they were enslaved for four hundred years. The exodus from Egypt, through the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea, is the Old Testament's defining act of salvation, remembered at every Passover: I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Egypt became the Bible's picture of slavery and of the world's bondage, and the exodus a picture of redemption. Yet Egypt is also a place of refuge — Joseph rose to power there, and the infant Jesus was carried there to safety, fulfilling Hosea's word, out of Egypt have I called my son. God's story runs both into and out of Egypt, turning a house of bondage into a stage for deliverance.

Egypt in Scripture

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Hosea 11:1, KJV
