Canaan was the land God promised to Abraham and his descendants — all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. It was described as a land flowing with milk and honey, a place of rest and abundance after the long journey of the patriarchs and the slavery of Egypt. The whole Pentateuch leans toward it.
Israel's entry into Canaan under Joshua fulfilled centuries-old promises, but the conquest was partial and the possession always imperfect. So Canaan became a picture of a greater rest still to come. Hebrews explains that the earthly rest pointed beyond itself: there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God — the true promised land of his eternal presence.
Canaan in Scripture
And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
