Jericho

The city whose walls fell down

Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world, was the first fortress Israel faced on entering the promised land — and God gave it to them by the strangest of strategies. For seven days they marched around its walls; on the seventh day, at the sound of the trumpets and a great shout, the wall fell down flat, and the city was taken. Hebrews lists it among the triumphs of faith.

Only Rahab and her household were spared, for she had hidden the spies and trusted the God of Israel. Centuries later Jesus passed through Jericho, healing blind Bartimaeus and calling Zacchaeus down from a tree. The city of fallen walls became a place where Jesus opened blind eyes and sought the lost — walls of a different kind coming down.

Jericho in Scripture

So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
