Bible questions

Is Jesus God?

What the Bible claims about the deity of Christ.

The short answer

Yes — the Bible presents Jesus as fully God. John calls him the Word who was God (John 1:1), Jesus accepted worship and forgave sins, and Thomas called him “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). In him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead (Colossians 2:9).

The Bible's claims

Scripture directly ascribes deity to Jesus: he is the Word who was God, the one in whom all the fulness of the Godhead dwells bodily. He is called Lord and God, and shares the divine name and honours.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1, KJV

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.
John 20:28, KJV

Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

What Jesus did and claimed

Jesus did what only God can do — forgiving sins, receiving worship, and claiming oneness with the Father. His enemies understood these claims clearly, accusing him of making himself equal with God. The resurrection vindicated them.

I and my Father are one.
John 10:30, KJV

I and my Father are one.

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Colossians 2:9, KJV

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Quick answers

Where does the Bible say Jesus is God?
In many places — John 1:1, John 20:28, Colossians 2:9, Titus 2:13, Hebrews 1:8, and more. He is called God, does what only God can do, and receives worship due God alone.
How can Jesus be God and man at the same time?
The Bible teaches Jesus is one person with two natures — fully divine and fully human. It's a mystery beyond full comprehension, but essential: only one who is both could bridge God and humanity.
Did Jesus ever claim to be God?
Yes, both directly ('I and my Father are one') and by his actions — forgiving sins, accepting worship, and applying God's own name to himself. His hearers understood and reacted accordingly.
