Jesus was a real first-century Jewish man from Nazareth — but the Bible presents him as far more: the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man, who died for sins and rose again. He is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16).
Fully God and fully man
Jesus was truly human — born, hungry, tired, tempted, and grieving. Yet the Bible also presents him as truly God: the Word who was with God and was God, who became flesh and dwelt among us. Both truths are essential to who he is.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Saviour and Lord
Jesus lived a sinless life, taught with authority, worked miracles, died on a cross for the sins of the world, and rose bodily from the dead. He is the promised Messiah and the only way to the Father — and he calls everyone to follow him.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Quick answers
- Was Jesus a real person?
- Yes — Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most historically attested figures of the ancient world, referenced in Christian and non-Christian sources alike. The debate is not whether he existed but who he was.
- Was Jesus just a good teacher?
- He was a profound teacher, but he claimed to be far more — the Son of God with authority to forgive sins. His claims and resurrection mean 'good teacher' alone doesn't fit what he said about himself.
- Why is Jesus so important?
- Christianity teaches that in Jesus, God became man to save us — his death and resurrection are the hinge of history and the only way to be reconciled to God.
