What Does the Bible Say About Self-Worth?

Where real value comes from — not achievement or approval, but God.

The short answer

The Bible roots human worth not in achievement or appearance but in God: we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), made in his image, and loved so much that Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Your value is given, not earned.

Made and known by God

Scripture says every person is fearfully and wonderfully made, formed by God with intention. Worth is not something we manufacture by performance; it is stamped on us by our Maker, who knew us before we were born.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139:14, KJV

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:27, KJV

God created man in his own image.

Loved at the highest cost

The clearest measure of your worth is what God was willing to pay for you. He loved you while you were still a sinner, and gave his Son. That love does not rise and fall with your successes or failures.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8, KJV

While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1 John 3:1, KJV

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us.

Quick answers

How do I stop basing my worth on what others think?
Scripture anchors identity in God's unchanging verdict rather than shifting human approval. When your worth is settled by the One who made and redeemed you, other opinions lose their grip.
Isn't focusing on self-worth prideful?
Biblical self-worth is not pride but security — seeing yourself as God sees you: made in his image, loved, and redeemed. It frees you from both self-hatred and self-obsession.
What does it mean to be made in God's image?
It means every person bears something of God — dignity, reason, relationship, moral capacity — giving every human life inherent, God-given value that no failure or circumstance can erase.
