Born Abram — exalted father — he was renamed by God: thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. He left Ur at God's call with nothing but a promise, and became the father of the faithful, the friend of God, and the ancestor of Israel, of the Messiah, and of all who believe.
His faith is the Bible's gold standard: he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Tested to the edge on Mount Moriah, he trusted that God would provide — and God did.
Abraham is dignified and enduring, borne by presidents and prophets alike, and often shortened warmly to Abe or Bram.
