Isaac's name means laughter — for both his parents laughed at the impossibility of a child in their old age, and then Sarah laughed again for joy: God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. He was the child of promise, the son through whom the covenant continued.
On Mount Moriah he carried the wood of his own near-sacrifice, a foreshadow of Christ; and God provided a ram instead. Isaac grew to marry Rebekah — one of Scripture's tenderest love stories — and fathered Jacob and Esau.
Isaac has been a top name for decades — friendly, faithful, and full of joy, with the easy nickname Ike or Zac.
