Adam is the first name in the Bible and the root of humanity itself. In Hebrew adam means man, and it plays on adamah, the ground — for the LORD God formed him of the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life. The name holds both dignity and humility: made in God's image, and made of earth.
Adam was given the garden to keep, the animals to name, and Eve as his companion. His story is the beginning of every story that follows — creation, the fall, and the long road toward the second Adam, Christ, in whom, Paul writes, all shall be made alive.
As a name today, Adam remains steady and timeless — plain, strong, and as old as the human race.
