Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, born after Abel's death. Eve named him saying, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel — Seth means appointed or granted, a name of consolation and fresh hope after grief.
Through Seth's line came Enoch, Noah, and eventually Abraham and the whole covenant story; his birth is where the Bible says men began to call upon the name of the LORD. He is the ancestor through whom the promise travelled.
Short, strong, and modern-sounding, Seth has stayed popular for its clean sound and its quiet story of hope after loss.
Seth in the Bible
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
