The angel found Gideon threshing wheat in secret for fear of the Midianites and greeted him — the least likely candidate — as thou mighty man of valour. Gideon doubted, asked for signs with a fleece, and then obeyed: God whittled his army from thirty-two thousand to three hundred, so the victory could belong only to the LORD.
With torches, trumpets, and clay jars, Gideon's tiny band routed a vast host. His story is a study in how God uses the fearful and the few. His name has since been given to the Bibles placed in hotel rooms worldwide.
Gideon is a strong, distinctive name — vintage, courageous, and increasingly chosen.
