Comfort for Someone Who Is Sick: Scripture and Encouragement

26 December 2025 · 3 min read · Comfort & Grief · Verse Collections

Illness has a way of making us feel small, frightened, and alone — whether it's our own body that's failing or that of someone we love. In those seasons, the Bible offers more than distraction; it offers the presence and comfort of God himself. Here is Scripture and gentle encouragement for anyone walking through sickness.

God is near to the hurting

The first and deepest comfort is simply this: God has not left you. He is described again and again as close to the broken and the suffering. 'He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.' Whatever the diagnosis, you are not facing it outside his care. He is near to the sickbed, near in the small hours, near when you're too weary to pray.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3, KJV

Strength when you have none

Sickness drains us, and there are days with nothing left. The Bible speaks tenderly to exactly that emptiness: 'they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength.' God's strength is not for the strong but for the depleted — a strength supplied precisely where ours runs out. On the days you can't summon anything, you can lean on his.

A promise for fear

Illness brings fear — of pain, of the unknown, of what comes next. Into that fear God speaks a promise repeated more than almost any other: 'Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.' You may not know the outcome, but you can know the One who holds it, and who holds you.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10, KJV

Bring it to God in prayer

The Bible invites us to pray plainly for healing and help. 'Is any sick among you? let him... pray.' Ask boldly for healing, and ask others to pray with you — there's no need to face it in silence. And even as we ask, we can rest in a God who is good, whose care doesn't depend on the outcome, and who works all things for the good of those who love him.

Hope beyond this body

For the Christian, there's a hope that even the hardest diagnosis cannot cancel. One day, God promises, there will be no more sickness at all: he 'shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.' Whatever this body suffers now, it is not the end of the story.

When sickness comes, God's Word meets us with real comfort: he is near to the hurting, he gives strength to the depleted, he speaks peace to our fear, he welcomes our prayers, and he holds out a hope that outlasts even death. If you're unwell, or caring for someone who is, take these words slowly. You are not alone, and the God who loves you is nearer than the illness.
